Cataract Surgeries

What is Cataract?

A cataract is a common eye condition in which the natural lens inside the eye becomes progressively cloudy, affecting the way light passes through to the retina. As this clouding develops, vision may become blurred, dim, or less sharp over time.

In the early stages, cataracts may cause only mild changes in vision. However, as the condition progresses, it can begin to interfere with everyday activities such as reading, recognising faces, or driving—especially in low-light conditions.

Cataracts most commonly develop as part of the natural ageing process, but they may also occur due to other factors, including:

  • Diabetes
  • Long-term steroid medication
  • Previous eye injury or trauma
  • Certain underlying eye conditions
  • Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light
  • According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cataracts
remain one of the leading causes of visual impairment worldwide.
  • The good news is that cataracts are treatable with modern surgical techniques, and vision can often be significantly improved once the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens.

How Cataract Surgery Can Improve Your Vision

Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed and safest surgical procedures worldwide. Modern surgical techniques allow the cloudy natural lens to be removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens.

  • Improved clarity of visionPatients often notice sharper and brighter vision after recovery.
  • Better colour perceptionColours appear more vivid once the cloudy lens is removed.
  • Reduced glare and improved night visionParticularly beneficial for driving at night.
  • Improved independence and quality of lifeClearer vision supports daily activities such as reading, working, and social interaction.
  • Reduced reliance on glasses Depending on lens choice. Advanced intraocular lenses may help correct distance or astigmatism.

Why Early Cataract Surgery Matters

Cataracts often develop gradually, which is why many patients delay seeking treatment. However, as vision becomes increasingly blurred or hazy, it may begin to affect daily safety, independence, and overall quality of life.

Ignoring these changes may lead to:

More Advanced Cataracts Over Time

As cataracts progress, vision may continue to decline,  and in some cases, the lens becomes denser and harder, which may make the surgical process more complex compared to earlier-stage treatment.

Increased Difficulty in Daily Activities

Simple tasks such as reading, recognising faces, or watching television may become more challenging over time.

Reduced Safety, Especially When Driving

Glare from headlights and poor night vision can make driving more difficult and potentially unsafe.

Greater Dependence on Others

As vision worsens, everyday activities may require assistance, affecting independence and confidence.

Take Action Before It Affects Your Lifestyle

If you are noticing changes in your vision, a timely assessment can help determine whether cataracts are the cause and what treatment options are available. Modern cataract surgery is a safe and effective procedure, and early evaluation allows for better planning and a smoother overall treatment journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

The cost of cataract surgery varies depending on several factors, including the type of intraocular lens (IOL) selected, the complexity of the procedure, and the surgical facility used. During your consultation, the eye doctor will assess your eye condition and discuss the most suitable treatment options, along with the estimated cost of surgery.

Cataract surgery is usually recommended when the cataract begins to significantly affect your vision and daily activities, such as reading, driving, or recognising faces. Your eye doctor will assess the severity of the cataract and advise whether surgery is appropriate based on your visual needs and overall eye health.

Once a cataract has been removed, it does not return. However, some patients may develop a condition known as posterior capsule opacification (PCO) months or years after surgery, which can cause vision to become cloudy again. This condition can usually be treated quickly and effectively with a simple laser procedure.

Cataract surgery is typically performed under local anaesthesia, and most patients experience minimal discomfort during the procedure. The surgery is usually completed within a short time, and patients are able to return home on the same day.

Most patients notice improvement in their vision within a few days after surgery, although full visual stabilisation may take several weeks. Your eye doctor will provide post-operative instructions and schedule follow-up visits to monitor the healing process.

This depends on the type of intraocular lens implanted and your individual eye condition. Some patients may still require glasses for reading or certain activities, while others may experience reduced dependence on spectacles.

Cataract surgery in Singapore may be claimable through Medisave and certain insurance policies, subject to the terms and conditions of your coverage. Patients may use their own Medisave or that of immediate family members. Our clinic staff can advise you on available claim options during your consultation.
